NZOUG, Reimagined: Our New Constitution and a Stronger Future

A new chapter for a community built on connection, learning, and shared passion for Oracle in Aotearoa.

Change isn’t just about compliance.

Sometimes, it’s about recommitting to who we are — and who we want to become.

Over the past year, NZOUG has gone through a significant transformation behind the scenes. We’ve reviewed and modernised our constitution and successfully re-registered under the New Zealand Incorporated Societies Act 2022 — a legislative update that reshapes how community organisations like ours are governed, protected, and empowered for the future.

This wasn’t just a paperwork exercise.

It was a chance to reset NZOUG for the next decade.

Why the Incorporated Societies Act 2022 Matters

The new Act replaces legislation that’s been in place for over a century. It brings modern governance expectations that reflect how organisations actually operate today — including digital participation, transparency, and clearer responsibilities for committee members.

For NZOUG, this means:

  • ✅ Clearer governance and decision-making

  • ✅ Stronger protections for members and volunteers

  • ✅ More transparency and accountability

  • ✅ A modern structure that supports growth and innovation

In short: it helps ensure NZOUG is resilient, trustworthy, and future-ready.

What Changed in the NZOUG Constitution?

Our updated constitution was carefully rewritten to reflect:

🔹 Modern governance best practice

Clearer roles for the committee, better decision-making processes, and stronger conflict-of-interest management.

🔹 Member-first design

More clarity around member rights, voting, and participation — whether you’re attending events in person or online.

🔹 Longevity and continuity

Stronger rules around succession, financial stewardship, and sustainability to ensure NZOUG thrives long-term.

🔹 Alignment with how NZOUG actually operates

Our constitution now reflects the reality of how we run meetups, webinars, conferences, partnerships, and digital engagement.

This wasn’t done in isolation. The updated draft was shaped with community input and approved by members — keeping NZOUG grounded in what matters most: its people.

What This Means for Members

This update gives NZOUG a stronger foundation to:

  • 🚀 Run bigger and better events (like Tūtahi and regional meetups)

  • 🌱 Support the next generation of Oracle professionals

  • 🌍 Grow partnerships with industry, vendors, and community groups

  • 🔐 Operate with greater transparency and trust

  • 💡 Experiment with new formats, platforms, and ways of connecting

It also ensures that NZOUG can continue to operate confidently, legally, and sustainably in a changing regulatory environment.

A Future-Ready NZOUG

The tech world moves fast.

Communities need to move with it.

By updating our constitution and registering under the new Act, NZOUG isn’t just staying compliant — we’re choosing to be intentional about our future. This gives us the freedom to evolve, the structure to scale, and the governance to lead.

This milestone supports everything we’re building toward:

  • A stronger national presence

  • More accessible learning for members across Aotearoa

  • Deeper engagement with students and early-career professionals

  • A vibrant, inclusive Oracle community that feels welcoming and relevant

Thank You to Our Community

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to reviewing, discussing, and voting on the new constitution. Governance isn’t glamorous — but it’s the foundation that allows everything else to flourish.

Your engagement helps ensure NZOUG remains a community run by its members, for its members.

What’s Next?

With our governance foundations strengthened, we’re now focused on what really matters:

Building value for you.
