Since our founding in 1989, NZOUG has been more than “just a user group.” Our mission has always been to connect, uplift, and empower Aotearoa’s digital community — not only seasoned Oracle professionals, but students, newcomers to tech, and organisations navigating technological change.
We believe technology should be an inclusive enabler, not a barrier. We provide free or low-cost access to learning, host meetups, webinars, regional events, and foster peer networks that help people grow, learn, and migrate smoothly through the evolving Oracle landscape.
Now — more than ever — that mission matters. The pace of change in cloud, multi-cloud, data and AI, regulatory requirements around data sovereignty, and the growing need for digital inclusion mean NZOUG has a critical role.
Where NZOUG Is Headed: Opportunities & Strategic Focus
As we look forward, there are several trends and opportunities that position NZOUG ideally to lead, support, and evolve.
1. Embracing Cloud, Multi-Cloud & Hybrid Architectures
With many organisations in New Zealand increasingly shifting to cloud or hybrid infrastructures, NZOUG is amplifying its support for cloud- and multi-cloud oriented groups. Our “Multi-Cloud” focus — and discussions around cloud infrastructure, integration, and hybrid setups — reflect this shift.
By facilitating knowledge sharing about what works (and what doesn’t) in a New Zealand context — including compliance, data sovereignty, and regulatory pressures — NZOUG can help Kiwi organisations make informed architectural decisions.
2. Expanding into Data, AI & Emerging Technologies
Oracle’s ecosystem is evolving rapidly: databases are no longer just about structured data, but about analytics, AI, automation, and scale. NZOUG’s remit already includes these modern domains (cloud computing, data literacy, AI) beyond traditional database administration.
In future, NZOUG can become the go-to forum in Aotearoa for professionals exploring AI-enabled Oracle services, data engineering pipelines, hybrid data/analytics platforms, and AI governance — helping members stay ahead of global trends while applying them locally.
3. Deepening Community & Inclusion — Te Ao Oracle, Youth & Equity
What sets NZOUG apart is our commitment to inclusion: providing free or subsidised access for learners, engaging with students and jobseekers, supporting regional participation across the entire country, and embedding cultural inclusion including language and Māori perspectives.
Looking forward, cultivating diversity (geographic, cultural, experience-level) should remain central. NZOUG can grow outreach to under-represented groups, partner with tertiary institutions, and support digital literacy broadly — not only amongst seasoned IT professionals but across communities.
4. Evolving the Engagement Model: Special Interest Groups (SIGs) & Flexible Participation
To cater for a variety of interests — from Oracle Cloud, APEX, integrations, AI, to multi-cloud infrastructure — NZOUG is increasingly structured around Special Interest Groups (SIGs). This allows members to dive deep into specific areas relevant to their work or interests.
Going forward, expanding SIGs, encouraging regional meetups (online and in-person), hybrid events, and asynchronous community forums (for those who can’t travel) will help more people participate: including students, working professionals outside major centres, and international collaborators.
5. Advocacy & Voice in Ecosystem: Representing NZ Users to Oracle & Beyond
As a national user group, NZOUG plays a bridging role between New Zealand’s Oracle community and the broader global Oracle ecosystem, including vendors, partners, and international user-group networks.
In the future, that voice could become more influential — not just in terms of feedback on Oracle products and services, but also shaping how Oracle addresses data-sovereignty, compliance, indigenous perspectives, and local-use case requirements for Aotearoa.
Challenges Ahead: What NZOUG Must Navigate
Growth and ambition come with challenges. For NZOUG to deliver the future above, we must navigate:
Volunteer sustainability & engagement: NZOUG relies on volunteers. As activities expand (SIGs, meetups, webinars, events, outreach), sustaining volunteer enthusiasm, workload, and governance will be crucial.
Relevance amidst rapid change: As technologies rapidly evolve (cloud, AI, hybrid architectures), NZOUG must stay responsive — continuously updating content, attracting speakers, and offering forums that matter for today’s challenges.
Inclusivity and equitable access: New Zealand is geographically diverse. Ensuring regional, cultural, socioeconomic representation is hard — but essential. We need mechanisms to support remote participation, outreach to underrepresented communities, and mentorship for beginners.
Balancing broad vs niche interests: With so many possible focus areas (database, cloud, AI, analytics, compliance, cultural inclusion), NZOUG must carefully manage priorities so that no group or interest is neglected, and the organisation does not diffuse into too many small disparate pockets.
Sustainable funding & sponsor engagement: To run conferences, events, and free/low-cost community activities, NZOUG must maintain a healthy base of sponsors and supporters — while preserving independence and a community-first ethos.
How You (the Community) Can Help Shape NZOUG’s Future
Because NZOUG is volunteer-led and community driven, the future depends on people like you — and on collective energy, ideas, and commitment. Here’s how you can help:
Join or start a SIG: If you have interest or expertise (cloud, APEX, AI, integration, compliance, Māori technology), consider joining an existing SIG or proposing a new one — community-driven specialisation keeps NZOUG relevant and responsive.
Contribute content & mentorship: Share your knowledge via webinars, blog posts, case studies, or mentoring — especially to newcomers and underrepresented groups.
Advocate for inclusive participation: Help reach students, smaller centres, or people outside major urban hubs — encourage remote or hybrid meetup formats; suggest ways to reduce barriers to entry (cost, travel, awareness).
Engage sponsors & partners responsibly: If you work for an organisation using Oracle, consider advocating internally for NZOUG sponsorship or support — this helps fund community activities, events, and ensures sustainability.
Give strategic input: Suggest improvements to governance, membership structure, event formats, outreach programs — because NZOUG belongs to the community.

By 2030, I envision NZOUG as a vibrant, multi-faceted community — not just for established Oracle professionals, but a cradle for future Kiwi tech talent, a forum for responsible AI & data discussion, a place where Māori language and tikanga are woven into digital transformation conversations, where regional and remote participants feel equally represented, and where New Zealand’s voice in the global Oracle ecosystem is strong and distinct.
In short: NZOUG could be more than a user group. It could be a national institution — nurturing digital equity, enabling innovation, and shaping the future of enterprise technology in Aotearoa.
