Why OCI Secret Management Matters

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Secret Management enables organisations to securely store, retrieve, and manage sensitive information such as passwords, API keys, tokens, and certificates across cloud environments.

Secrets are foundational to modern application security. They allow secure service-to-service communication and automation without hard-coding or exposing credentials in scripts, repositories, or configuration files. For NZOUG members, Oracle Customers in New Zealand running production workloads on OCI, this capability is essential for maintaining strong security posture while enabling DevOps agility.

When you log in to the OCI Console, you will now see a new section under Identity & Security called Secret Management. This dedicated entry point makes locating and managing secrets significantly more straightforward compared to previous navigation paths.

A New Dedicated Console Experience for Secrets

OCI has introduced a new, dedicated console experience for Secrets, making it easier than ever to locate and manage your secrets.

You will now find a dedicated “Secret Management” section under Identity & Security in the OCI Console. This enhancement delivers:

  • A cleaner, more focused layout

  • Faster navigation

  • A more intuitive workflow for day-to-day secret management

Importantly, this update is purely an interface enhancement. All APIs, SDKs, CLI workflows, automation scripts, permissions, and policies remain unchanged. Your existing integrations and governance models continue to work exactly as before.

How to View Your Secrets

Key Benefits for NZOUG Members, Oracle NZ Customers

1. Simpler Experience, Faster Access

Secrets can now be accessed directly from the Identity & Security menu, reducing navigation time and making administration more efficient.

2. Improved Visibility and Control

A dedicated interface provides clearer visibility into your secrets inventory. Features such as cross-region replication are easier to understand and manage, supporting high availability and disaster recovery strategies across regions.

How to Create a Secret in the New Experience

Creating a secret remains simple and consistent:

  1. Log in to the OCI Console

  2. Open the ☰ (hamburger menu)

  3. Navigate to Identity & Security → Secret Management

  4. Click Create Secret

  5. Provide the required details (name, compartment, vault, and secret content)

  6. Save

The process is familiar, but the improved layout makes it more streamlined and user-friendly.

Final Thoughts from NZOUG - Oracle Members, Oracle Partners, Oracle Customers

From an NZOUG perspective, this update reflects a broader trend we’re seeing in OCI: continuous refinement of the user experience without disrupting existing architectures or automation practices.

For organisations across New Zealand running mission-critical workloads on OCI, the enhanced Secret Management console delivers greater clarity, usability, and operational efficiency — while preserving the enterprise-grade security and control we expect.

If you’re already using OCI Secrets, this is a great time to explore the new interface. If you’re not yet leveraging it, Secret Management is a foundational capability worth integrating into your cloud security strategy.
